ONE!!

Dan and Linda came into town on Robert's birthday, which was Tuesday. Because he started running a fever that day, we didn't do much. I made stew and then after dinner he opened presents. He wasn't real interested in the packages which astonished me. I usually can't keep him out of anything in this house, but he didn't want anything to do with the gifts. Linda will have to send me some pictures because I didn't take any. (She also needs to send the wonderful picture she took of the four of us that's posted on her blog.)

His party was planned for Friday morning and we were going to have several friends join us for it. We got him a ride on car for his birthday so I decided to make his party car themed. His invitations had a car on them and I even bought the 3-d car cake pan and was going to attempt it (with Linda's help, that way I couldn't be held completely responsible if it looked atrocious).

When he woke with a fever Thursday morning, we called everyone to cancel. I was so sad to have to cancel his first birthday party. Linda and I took him to the doctor Friday morning and then I sent Chris out to pick up a few balloons and some ready made icing. I whipped up some cupcakes, (which looked atrocious and didn't taste much better), we lit his "1" candle, sang Happy Birthday and he dug into his cupcake. He wanted to share his sweet treat with everyone.

It wasn't what I had envisioned for my sweet baby boy's big day, but we had Grandma and Grandpa and cake, so it turned out to be pretty close to perfect just the way it was.

Sick Again!?!

This is long and probably terribly uninteresting to most. It's mainly for my records. A couple of weeks ago, I made an allergist appointment for Clara. I had put off getting her in for a follow-up of her allergy testing she had done last year because we hadn't met our deductible. The allergist had said to bring her in when she has illnesses that seem to start out as allergies. She's had plenty of infections this past year, but every time she's been sick, so has Robert, so it was always easier to take them in to their primary doctor at the same time than to make two separate appointments with two separate doctors.

So several weeks ago she started with a runny nose, like usual. Then a slight cough, then congestion, yada yada yada. It's always the same and it never goes away on its own. For once Robert wasn't sick at the same time so off to the allergist we went.

He quickly diagnosed her with a sinus infection which was no great surprise to me. He also wanted to do a CT scan and a breathing test. (Thank goodness we've met our deductible.) She did fine on the breathing test with no sign of wheezing. Again, no surprise. She's never had a bit of trouble with her lungs.

The CT scan on the other hand came back not so great. She actually went back to the room all by herself and did great. I was able to view the pictures on the computer with the doctor soon after the scan. One side of her sinuses was completely plugged. There was no black at all in the picture. He said she had a chronic sinus infection and when I questioned why she never mentions having pain, he said that chronic infections don't cause pain like acute infections do. Chronic infections cause the runny nose, nasal congestion and cough. It's probably the cause of her bad breath too. It was weird; when I took her in, her nose wasn't running, she could breathe fine through her nose, but she still sounded congested. The congestion is way up high in her sinuses.

He wants to try to get control of her allergies and started off by increasing the dose of antihistamine she's on. He had prescribed it on an as needed basis, but now wants her to take it every day. He also mentioned the possibility of weekly allergy shots. I'm still hesitant to start them because I know that's not going to go over well. I'm hoping we can try the antihistamine for a while before deciding on the injections.

The CT scan also showed her adenoids being severely infected and swollen and he mentioned having them removed in the future. That was the first time a doctor has ever mentioned anything about her adenoids, so I don't think I'm quite ready to have them removed. She was prescribed a week of oral steroids and 20 days of antibiotic. She doesn't seem to have much improvement 11 days later from what I can tell. She also ran a fever from Friday night through Saturday night. I'm not sure if it was from the infection or something unrelated. We go back next week for a follow up and to do another scan.

And now for Robert. His runny nose started up a few days after Clara's appointment. That Saturday night he coughed once or twice and again Sunday morning so I immediately started his breathing treatments during the day on Sunday. He woke fussy from his nap on Sunday and his nose was worse. On Tuesday, his birthday, he started running a fever. This was also the day Dan and Linda got here.

He was still running a fever on Thanksgiving Day, so we called and cancelled his birthday party that was scheduled for the next morning. The one nice thing about his sickness is he slept really well. He was sleeping through the night and taking long naps, waking happy and playing for a short while each time. He woke fever free on Friday, but aside from that he still didn't seem any better, so I got him in for an appointment that morning. He has a severe infection in his right ear. The doctor said it was close to rupturing. The other ear was slightly infected and he was also wheezing though not really bad. He said at this point it's pretty clear that he has asthma.

So he got a shot, an oral steroid, an antibiotic and is still on breathing treatments. These kids are wearing me out! I had Robert on a probiotic before this trying to get his gut back in shape (material for another post) and his diapers were just starting to be manageable. Now he's blowing out his diapers something awful despite still being on the probiotics. That and the steroid has turned him into a crazy baby. Oy. He's not sleeping as long now and is just beside himself when he gets upset. I'll be happy when he's done with them. Oh, I forgot to mention I have a little cold myself. Nothing too severe, but an annoying little addition to our holiday week nonetheless.

Twelve Months!!

Clara's Thanksgiving Feast

Clara's class at school had a Thanksgiving lunch the Friday before Thanksgiving. Clara got to go to school that day for lunch and she brought sugar cookies to share with the class. I forgot to get pictures of them, but let's just say I feel like an official mom of a school-aged child. I made them from my great-aunt's tea cake recipe which is yum-my. They were in the shape of pumpkins and I added another cookie on top with each child's initial. Of course, I would go and pass out the first cookie and realize a minute later that I gave her the wrong letter. D'oh! In my defense, someone was asking me a question as I handed out the cookie and my brain just doesn't register two things at once. I got to the last one and we tried to fashion an 'L' out of an 'M'. Oh well, they tasted good no matter what letter was on top.

The moms that were in charge of decorating did a wonderful job. The tables were beautifully decorated with tablecloths and centerpieces and the kids dined on turkey, croissants, grapes, cheese cubes, carrots and apples. When Clara sat at her spot and saw carrots on her plate, she informed one of the moms that she was allergic to carrots and then suddenly half the class was allergic as well.

The kids drew pictures of what they were thankful for. Clara was thankful for Mommy and the sun. I'm thankful for my sweet little preschooler and for the wonderful year she's having at school.

Church Pumpkin Patch

I realized I hadn't posted any pictures of my Halloween costume and that just won't do. We went to the church's pumpkin patch the day before Halloween. Clara played a few games, bounced in a few bouncy houses and had popcorn and a sno cone. Robert had his first sno cone also. It was ice flavored and he loved it. He threw a fit when I took it away from him. My little Cheshire Cat kept his hood on the entire time. I don't remember if I mentioned it before, but there were quite a few people that didn't know what he was even when they were standing together. Maybe my being dressed as Olive Oyl was throwing them off. Yeah, that's it. Couldn't be my costume-making skills.

I had planned on dressing up as the White Rabbit to match the little ones, but time got away from me and I didn't get around to putting anything together. So I went out and bought me an Olive Oyl costume a few hours before a Halloween party I was attending on Thursday. I wore it again on Saturday to the Pumpkin Patch and was asked several times if I had seen The Office that week because Pam had dressed up as Olive Oyl too. Clara was none to happy that I didn't dress up to match her and Robert.

Remind me to never dye my hair black. Those eyebrows were something else alright.

Predicament

We get the kids two gifts for Christmas. One from us and one from Santa. They also get only one birthday gift. Because of that, we try to make them pretty nice gifts. Well, I asked Clara a while back what she was going to ask Santa for for Christmas. She usually doesn't know, so I suggested maybe a bike since she's still riding the tricycle she got for her 2nd birthday.

She was really excited about that idea so I felt confident to go ahead and let Santa know he could have it delivered and we'd hold onto it until Christmas to save room in his sleigh. I also picked up her birthday and Christmas gifts. Actually, I've finished all my birthday and Christmas shopping for both my kids and the niece and nephews. They're even wrapped. You're jealous, aren't you?

I digress. So a couple of days ago Clara tells me, "I know what I'm going to ask Santa for for Christmas." Uh-oh, I think to myself. "Yeah, I know. A big girl bike since your tricycle is too small for you now. A new bike would be so cool!" She says, "No, I'm not going to tell you. It's going to be a surprise!"

Hmmmm. What to do. There was no convincing her that she needed to tell me what she's going to ask him for.

More Alice

It's so nice to have a child that is in that willing-to-pose-for-pictures stage. Unlike this child from a few years back. She wanted to act out scenes from the movie, so here she is as tall Alice......

and as crying Alice because she can't get through the little door.

Too bad I was fresh out of flamingo croquet mallets, hookah smoking caterpillars and momeraths or we coulda had some real fun.

Backtracking

I'm going to try to get caught up on my posts before the holiday mayhem hits. So here's our evening of pumpkin carving that took place a couple of days before Halloween. We all did our part to carve a perfect pumpkin.

I was in charge of scooping and enlisted the help of these two. Max supervised the entire process.

And Robert was a huge help. Here he is cleaning the bowl by emptying the contents onto the floor.

Max donated his temporary clean-up services as well. (I say temporary because during the night he deposited the seeds on the carpet upstairs.)

Clara helped immensely during the carving process by hanging onto Daddy's back while he worked.

And the finished product. The kit I bought came with the eyes. I really only needed a scoop.

I'm not sure why Clara's making this face, but this was the best of the three pictures we took. Maybe because it's a scary pumpkin?

I do know why she's making this face though. This would be her ghost impression.

And here's the porch all lit up. I cheated. The other two jack-o-lanterns plug in.

Just a few more. It makes my little heart happy Robert is able to wear something that was Clara's. Like this Halloween shirt for instance. Both of them wore it. Woohoo!

Art

Clara: "I drew this picture for you, Daddy."

Chris: "Thank you, Clara."

Clara: "That's you. You're wearing a plaid skirt." (a kilt was what she was going for)

Chris: "Huh. And who's sitting in the chair?"

Clara: "That's not a chair. It's a tiger."

Warning!

J Dog, do not continue reading this post. Just look away.

I'm warning you. You do not want to see what lies ahead.

You will lose all respect you may have had for me.

Ok, don't say I didn't warn you.

Max is saying, "This had better not wind up on the internet." Ha! I am cracking myself up over here!
