The Princess and the Pea

Clara and I enjoyed a girls only outing yesterday morning. We went to see a performance of The Princess and the Pea put on by Houston Grand Opera. It was part of a free children's series, so it was the perfect length for kids at 45 minutes and it was free, which also equates to perfection in my book. Nugget came home from school with Clara again this weekend, so he got to tag along.

We got to meet a cow princess before the show........

And then the real princess after the show. This was the only cast member she really cared to take a picture with, which was ok with me since we had to wait about 15 minutes to see her.

The production was very small with only five cast members that played multiple roles. There was a fight scene that included a dragon and ogre that were full size puppets. Those scenes were a lot of fun for the kids. And then the bass came out as one of the girls vying for the prince's hand and that part was great. It was a fun little show and the best part was getting to spend a little one on one girl time with Clara.

The Wonderful Wizard

Grandpa and Grandma gave Clara the first two books in the Wizard of Oz series for Christmas. We read about a chapter a night and finished the first one last week. We both really enjoyed it. There is so much more to the book than what's in the movie. Small details were changed or omitted for the movie and large portions of the book are left out. There are kalidahs and winkies, quadlings and a miniature country made entirely of china. There is also a lot more to the story of the winged monkeys and you find out why the Tin Woodman is made out of tin.

All that to say, read the book. It's a fun read, especially if you've grown up enjoying the movie. Oh, and get the 100th anniversary edition if you're going to be reading it to the younger crowd. It is filled with the original illustrations. There's an illustration on almost every page.

So after finishing the book, I was excited to let Clara watch the movie. I was a little concerned that she would be scared, but she has a friend her age that's read it and wasn't bothered by the movie, so I thought she'd handle it alright too. She tends to have a pretty good grasp of what's real and what's not in movies. Well, she loved it! She wasn't at all scared of the monkeys. In the book, the monkeys do kidnap Dorothy and her friends for the witch, but they also help Dorothy throughout and they don't want to hurt her, so I think Clara had formed an idea of them before going into the movie. I'm sure that knowing how the story ends helps ease some of the tension of the movie as well.

Here she is when Dorothy opens the door of the house after she lands in Munchkinland. Priceless.

And this was when the Cowardly Lion was barking like a dog. He was her favorite character and she was cracking up at all of his antics.

The Wizard of Oz is now Clara's favorite book and movie. For today at least. I so love sharing moments like this with my sweet little girl.

Follow Up

Robert had his follow up appointment this morning and he has another ear infection. It's in only one ear this time and the good news is there was nothing in his chest! So it would seem the meds are working for him since this was the first time there was no wheezing. The bad news is this is his third infection in 2 months so tubes are probably close at hand. The doctor just wasn't quite ready to give me a referral today. He wants to wait just a bit longer. That's totally ok with me since I'm a "wait and see" kinda girl. We go back again in two weeks.

5 and 1

I had the kids pictures made right before Robert's birthday. They did so well. Yay for cooperative children!

Say Cheeeeeese

He's such a little goober. Better get used to this face; I'm fairly certain we'll be seeing a lot of it. It cracks me up every time he flashes this grin.

He enjoyed his first donut this morning. He wasn't just overly excited about it, but it was a plain old-fashioned with no glaze, so I guess I can't blame the guy. Can a donut really be called a donut if it doesn't have icing dripping off of it?

Everyone Loves J Dog!

Jason was in Houston this weekend helping a friend with a baseball clinic, so he stayed with us for a couple of nights before heading back home. He hadn't visited since right before Robert was born, so they met for the first time.

And just like his sister, Robert is also a J Dog fan. Clara's eyes are closed in the next one, but I wanted to showcase Robert's new smile that he plasters on his face when the camera comes out. It's too cute. I'll have to post a few other pics.

I can't even begin to list all of the games that Clara and Jason played, but she managed to stuff his waking hours full of non-stop fun. He just goes right along with whatever she comes up with. This time Robert toddled after him the entire time too, begging to be picked up. Jason came with me to pick Clara up from school on Tuesday and she was speechless when he came through the door of her classroom. I think that pretty much made her entire day.

We always enjoy our visits from J Dog, but I totally understand why they are as infrequent as they are. He needs that much time to recover.

I'll end this post with this 2006 J Dog and Clara flashback. Awwww

Clara Update

Food allergies-- I am happy to report that several of Clara's food allergies are beginning to disappear. The allergist said that as she got older, her allergies might change, which seems to be the case. He said she might start trading food ones for environmental ones. We've added bananas, berries and carrots back into her diet without any problems. The bananas and carrots both caused immediate itching in her mouth before and now she can eat them without incident. I think she can also have broccoli, cauliflower, cantaloupe and watermelon. Honeydew seems to still cause problems though. Raw eggs still cause major hives and we'll continue to steer clear of fish, peanuts and nuts.

Environmental allergies-- We had her follow-up appointment for her sinus infection on December 15. The doctor did another CT scan and her sinuses were all clear. Her adenoids were also normal. Since the antibiotic was able to clear the infection and everything looks normal, we're going to see how she does on the daily antihistamine for a while.

I really think it's helping. She gets sick nearly every time we go out west, but this time she didn't. In fact, she hasn't been sick since the sinus infection in November. She has been coughing every once in a while this past week, so we'll see if it goes away on it's own now that she's on the antihistamine. If she continues to have frequent infections, the next step will be weekly allergy shots. I'm praying we don't have to go that route. I at least want to go through this spring to see if the antihistamine offers her enough relief when the pollen starts to fall.

I'm pretty sure we're going to switch allergists. I think her current allergist is very knowledgeable and I trust his judgement, he's just not got the best bedside manner. He has more than one location and in my opinion just has way too many patients. I do love his nursing staff though. They've all been very friendly and great with Clara. The doctor is very abrupt, in and out as quick as he can, not very personable, doesn't look you in the eye, that kind of stuff. He really doesn't even acknowledge Clara when we go in. I just want someone who's a little better with kids. I ran it past our doctor and I'm obviously not the first patient that's had those thoughts, so he gave me a referral for a new one. If this is someone that Clara's going to be seeing a lot of in the next few years, I want someone that can at least pretend that they like her.

Robert Update

I've not done a very good job of keeping this blog updated with all of the changes that have been happening these last couple of months, so I'll do a quick update starting with Robert.

Eating-- I weaned Robert a couple of weeks before his birthday. I don't remember if I mentioned it or not, but I was having frequent migraines during the process of weaning him. We were down to morning and night only and I had intended to do that for a while when someone mentioned the migraines might be so bad because I was weaning and my hormones were all out of whack. So I promptly cut the boy off. I had one more a few days later and have been fine since.

He's eating very well now finally. He loves beans, meat, green smoothies, and pasta. He doesn't care for eggs, rice, most bread and most veggies. He's also lactose intolerant like Clara was. His seems to be a little more severe though. He can't handle yogurt which Clara never had a problem with. He's drinking lactose free milk and has rice cheese on occasion. Thankfully he hasn't shown any signs of food allergies yet.

Sleeping-- If someone had told me that Robert would be an awesome sleeper very soon just three months ago, I would've laughed in their face. I'm happy to announce that Robert is indeed a wonderful sleeper now! It finally just clicked for him around his birthday. Bedtime is now one of my favorite times that I spend with him. I read a book while he enjoys a cup of milk. Then I brush his teeth, turn off the light and hold him while I sing a song to him. He holds his blanket and just cuddles up close, talking and smiling, and buries his head in his blanket the whole time. I put him in bed, cover him up and turn on his lullaby seahorse, tell him goodnight and walk out of his door with him smiling. Ahhhhhh. So much better than the routine we had going before.

This would be the second child that I nursed to sleep until a year old and yet they still figured out the sleeping on their own thing. So I tend to disagree when I hear people say that if you nurse your newborn to sleep, you'll have a two year old on your hands that can't soothe themselves to sleep. Like most things, I think it totally depends on the kid. He goes down at 7:30 and wakes around 7:00-7:30 and rarely wakes during the night. When he does, it's because his diaper has leaked (which is happening fairly frequently right now) or he's teething (in which case he gets some Tylenol and goes right back to sleep). I feel so much more rested now.

I transitioned him to one nap a day right around his birthday and that has made a huge difference too. He goes down around noon, or 5 hours after waking and will typically sleep 2-3 hours! No more of these 20 minute naps I endured for his first year. The only time he sleeps less than that is when he's sick.

Health-- I posted back in November when Robert got sick with a really bad ear infection on his birthday. He had a follow-up appointment, which doubled as his one year well check, on December 20th. His ears were clear. We left for Pecos a couple of days later and then the day after Christmas, he started coughing just a little. We started breathing treatments that day. He was getting worse and Chris was starting to feel bad also, so we decided to leave a day early and make the trip home in two days instead of one.

Monday was bad. Robert coughed and cried the entire drive to Kerrville where we stayed the night. He would fall asleep and then cough and wake up 5 minutes later. The poor guy was in a lot of pain. I called the doctor to try and get a prescription or a correct dosage for something OTC, but since pulling all of the cough and cold meds for kids under 2 a couple of years ago, they won't do that anymore. They said there was nothing they could do for us. Chris was feeling horrible all day too, so I drove with no one to talk to with Robert screaming and coughing.

We bought a humidifier in Kerrville and Robert and Chris both slept really well and woke feeling better. Robert slept a good portion of the drive home so we all had a much more pleasant day. Robert wasn't feeling too bad the rest of the week, so since it was a holiday week and his doctor was out of the office, I put off making an appointment until the next Tuesday. Yep, double ear infection and wheezing. Antibiotics, steroids and a twice a day daily asthma medicine.

We'll see how he does on the daily meds for a few months, but if he keeps having these ear infections we'll be looking at tubes soon. He finished his antibiotics last week and then started coughing a little on Sunday. The cough sounded very "asthma-like" in my opinion. Then Monday his nose was running and he was still coughing. I decided to skip ladies bible class yesterday because he was so snotty on Monday, but he ended up being fine. No runny nose, little to no coughing and has been that way today too. He does have congestion in his chest and could still very well take a turn and end up with an infection, but I'm really hoping that the daily medicine is working for him. He's supposed to go in for a follow-up appointment next week so we'll see what the doc says.

I guess that just about covers it for Robert.

Wild Man

I really need to do a good update but I've just not been in the mood lately. I've got a pretty good case of the blahs. I will leave you with this picture I took tonight though.

I'm having the hardest time getting anything accomplished today

and I just can't figure out why.
